Fast Home Improvements That’ll Take You Less Than an Hour

By in Tips

While roofing is something best left to the experts, many DIY projects take less than 60 minutes and can really spruce up your home. Here are a few for starters that won’t put a dent in your weekend but will make a decent improvement.

Freshen Up Your Front Door

Nothing is more welcoming to guests than a front door with a fresh coat of paint. This is a quick way to brighten up your entrance and doesn’t take much more than sanding off any peeling paint, then painting on a couple of coats of semigloss in an eye-catching colour, perhaps something that matches your roof. While you’re at it, you could add a front door mat, arrange some potted plants and make sure the path is swept clean and well-lit at night with some solar powered garden lights.

Fix Squeaky Doors

A niggling problem like squeaky door hinges can go unfixed for years, perhaps you’ll even eventually get used to it. However, your guests won’t, your squeaky door hinges will drive them mad – they may even stop visiting. Luckily, this is an easy fix. The cause could be simply that the screws in the hinge need tightening. If that doesn’t work then try oiling the hinge. Spray, drop or rub lubricant such as WD-40 or petroleum jelly onto the hinge and move the door backwards and forwards to work it into the hinge.

Add More Light

Swapping out lighting fixtures can instantly update a room, and can add a whole new mood or depth to it. Adding lights to areas that have no lighting is a practical and quick way to make your home more functional. These could be a light with a pull chain in a wardrobe, or battery operated motion sensor lights in a hallway that turns off after 30 seconds or after closing the door in a pantry.

Replace Kitchen & Bathroom Hardware

Updating kitchen hardware such as drawer pulls and cabinet handles can up the ante in the style department. Units come installed with factory-issue handles and pulls that aren’t particularly appealing. Replacing these with hardware pieces that reflect your personal taste is a quick fix. Swapping out taps in bathrooms can inject elegance or a more modern look depending on your overall decor. This can often be an easy DIY job, but if it’s an older style sink and tap configuration you’ll want to call in a plumber.

Putty Holes in Walls

Yes, it’s a boring job, that’s why you’ve put it off for years. But nail holes in the walls from botched picture hanging attempts are noticeable and they don’t make a good impression. Once you get going with the putty knife you’ll be surprised at how many other holes there are you hadn’t even noticed. Minor holes can be sanded after a couple of hours and painted but larger holes might need to dry overnight.
